April 18, 2025 | Baseball
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's Ross Highfill was tabbed to the midseason watch list for the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award.
Highfill has started 23 of the 27 games that he has appeared in this season, 21 of which have come behind the plate. The 6-foot, 200-pounder is hitting .213 with two doubles, a triple, two home runs and 13 runs batted in. He also leads the Diamond Dawgs with nine steals in 11 attempts on the year.
Highfill is one of 56 collegiate backstops from around the country to be selected to the midseason watch list. This past Sunday, the Madison native hit a go-ahead pinch-hit homer in the top of the seventh inning that lifted the Bulldogs to a series win at then 12th-ranked Alabama.
The Buster Posey Award was previously known as the Johnny Bench Award and annually recognizes the top catcher in Division I baseball. MSU's Ed Easley won the Johnny Bench Award in 2007.
Semifinalists for the Buster Posey Award will be selected on May 19, finalists named on June 5 and the winner announced at a ceremony in Wichita, Kansas on June 26.
