WEST Point, Miss. – Mississippi State put together two solid rounds on Monday, sitting in second place overall after Day 1 of the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship with three Bulldogs in the top 10.
Â
"I feel really good about today," head coach Dusty Smith said. "I really like where our guys' games are. They played some really solid golf all day. I love the resilience we're showing. Tomorrow is going to be a tough day, expecting some winds from the north, which will change the golf course. We're looking forward to the challenge and excited to get back out and compete."
Â
The Bulldogs were led by Dain Richie, Harrison Davis and Ugo Malcor, who all sit in the top 10 after the first two rounds.
Â
Richie fired back-to-back rounds of 3-under 69 to sit in a tie for fifth overall at 6-under. He carded six birdies in both rounds, including a stretch of three-straight in Round 2 on the heels of a struggle through Hole 13. He has now shot par or better in 15 of his last 17 rounds.
Â
"I'm really proud of how Dain battled in that second round," Smith added. "He made a triple bogey on No. 13 then bounced back with birdies on holes 15 through 17. That's huge for our team."
Â
Davis carded rounds of 70 and 69 to begin the event. He poured in six birdies in his morning round then added a birdie and an eagle in the afternoon to put himself in a tie for seventh.
Â
Malcor returned to the lineup with a team-best opening round of 4-under 68, capped off by a bogey-free 33 on the back nine. He played steady golf in Round 2, carding two birdies and 15 pars to complete the day at 5-under overall.
Â
Garrett Endicott rebounded from a disappointing first round to card a 1-under 71 with three birdies in his last six holes. He stands 27th after climbing 13 spots on the field in Round 2.
Â
Trip Duke, competing as an individual, played his best golf as a Bulldog. He carded an even-par opening round before scorching the course in Round 2 with three birdies and an eagle for a career-best 3-under 69. He enters Tuesday in a tie for 17th.
Â
Alejandro Fierro fired an impressive 70 in the second round and is in 27th overall as an individual.Â
Â
The Bulldogs begin play with individuals – David Beard, Fierro and Duke – going off No. 10 at 9:20 a.m. CT in 10-minute intervals. The team opens the final round at 9:40 a.m. with Wilson teeing off No. 1. Endicott, Malcor, Davis and Richie will follow.
