No. 19 State Splits Doubleheader To Open Series At No. 25 Alabama
March 14, 2025 | Softball
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – In its first-ever game in Rhoads Stadium as a ranked team, No. 19 Mississippi State flexed its muscles, defeating No. 25 Alabama, 9-1, for its first run-rule victory in the series. The Bulldogs dropped a back-and-forth game in the nightcap, falling, 7-4, as Alabama evened the series.
Â
State (23-5, 4-1 SEC) put runners on the bases in every inning of both games. The Bulldogs scored first in both contests and Sierra Sacco reached base in all but one plate appearance on the day. Offensively, State hit three home runs in Game 1, bringing their season total to 41 long balls.
Â
Raelin Chaffin went the distance in Game 1, striking out seven. The only run she allowed was unearned. The victory moved MSU to 4-0 in conference play for the first time in program history.
Â
"I think there was just a lot of focus from our hitters," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "It always different on the road. You get a chance to set the tone early. We were excited for a chance to get back on the field after Wednesday's game, and they did a really good job of swinging within the plan and attacking the pitches we knew we were going to get from her."
Â
In the second game of the day, the Bulldogs again opened the scoring, but Alabama (21-8, 1-1 SEC) answered with three runs in the bottom of the first. State took the lead with three runs in the fourth courtesy of a Morgan Stiles double and Sacco single, but the Crimson Tide responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame. A two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth secured the final score.
Â
Â
"I think it's always a benefit, especially for Jessie [Blaine] to get that first one off her back. I just love seeing it from different people in the lineup. I think that's something we've done really well this year. It gave us a chance to give Raelin [Chaffin] a cushion. It's a tough place to play here. It gave us a chance to maybe go to her in Game 2 if we had gotten it close enough."
Â
Raelin Chaffin on pitching around runners on base...
"I think it's just trusting my defense. A lot of plays were made by the defense that were really, really well-executed plays. They had my back the entire game. I think just having that trust, I can throw through the zone and let them make plays."
Â
Sierra Sacco scoring early and setting the tone…
"We know she's dropball heavy, so I was hunting that early. I know what she's going to throw and what she's good at, so I'm going to hit her best pitch. I'm just trying to get on base early for my team and score a run. It was big for momentum. I know it's loud in this house, so as momentum shifts to our side, it can kind of even out the crowd a bit."
