A quick rundown of MSU’s win over the Tigers.
THE BOTTOM LINE: A dominant second half proved to be the difference for No. 24 Mississippi State as the Bulldogs got back on the winning track with an 81-69 home victory over LSU on Saturday at the Humphrey Coliseum. MSU excelled on both ends of the court over the final 20 minutes of play to overcome a first half where the Tigers were punching right with the Dawgs. LSU led by as many as eight points in the first half and State found itself in a 37-35 hole at the intermission. Less than two minutes into the second half though, the Dawgs fought their way back in front. A back-and-forth few minutes saw the game tied at 50 with 14:21 to play, but that's when State went on a 10-3 run fueled by a couple of Josh Hubbard treys to take control. MSU led by at least five for the rest of the way on the path to the win. The triumph is State's 20th of the season, moving the Bulldogs to 20-9 overall for the year. MSU is now 8-8 in Southeastern Conference play.
KEY NUMBERS: Hubbard scored 20 of his game-high 30 points in the final period to fuel Mississippi State's second-half surge. The Bulldogs shot 64 percent as a group in the frame, connecting on 16 of 25 shots, and LSU couldn't keep up as MSU's defense also clamped down in the second half. LSU went from shooting 41.2 percent in the first half to just 36.7 percent in the second.
NEXT UP FOR THE DAWGS: Mississippi State has its final home contest of the season. The Bulldogs and the Texas Longhorns face off on Tuesday, March 4. Tip time at the Humphrey Coliseum is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised by SEC Network.
