March 04, 2025 | Men's Basketball
A quick rundown of the action as MSU falls to the Longhorns.
THE BOTTOM LINE: A furious 12-3 Mississippi State run at the end of regulation forced overtime, however the No. 25 Bulldogs were unable to capitalize in the extra period and fell 87-82 to Texas on Tuesday night at the Humphrey Coliseum. MSU trailed for the entirety of the second half before rallying as the clock wound down. An RJ Melendez steal off a Texas inbounds pass resulted in a game-tying basket by Riley Kugel that sent the game to five extra minutes. In OT, the Longhorns scored the first five points to build a lead and the last five to put the contest away. With the loss, State falls to 20-10 overall and 8-9 in Southeastern Conference action.
KEY NUMBERS: MSU once again fell victim to an opponent's strong shooting night from beyond the arc. Texas connected on 11 of its 23 three-point attempts (47.8 percent) with Tramon Mark and Tre Johnson combining to go 10-for-15 from long range while accounting for 47 total points. Six different Bulldogs were able to reach double figures in scoring, but it wasn't quite enough for MSU. Josh Hubbard led the way for State with 16 points. Melendez added 15. KeShawn Murphy had 13 while Cameron Matthews and Kugel had a dozen each. Shawn Jones Jr. scored 10.
NEXT UP FOR THE DAWGS: Mississippi State wraps up the regular season with an SEC road tilt. The Bulldogs face the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday, March 8. Tip time at Bud Walton Arena is set for 11 a.m. and the game will be televised by SEC Network.
