February 01, 2025 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE – After sweeping a doubleheader on Friday, Mississippi State is set to host two more matches inside the Rula Tennis Pavilion on Sunday.
The Bulldogs start the day against UAB at 11 a.m. followed by a matchup against Arkansas State at 3 p.m. It'll be MSUs third twin bill of the year and will try to remain unbeaten after blanking Bellarmine and Samford 4-0 to begin the season on Jan. 18 and defeating Tulane 6-1 and Alabama A&M 7-0 this past Friday.Â
Sunday's matches intertwine with a men's tennis doubleheader at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre which begins with Tulane at 9 a.m. followed by Tennessee Tech at 1 p.m.Â
Mississippi State's women's squad has won 77 of their last 79 non-conference matches at home dating back to Feb. 27, 2013. Chris Hooshyar has posted a 13-1 mark during non-conference play at home since taking over as the Bulldogs' head coach last season.
UAB enters Sunday with a 2-1 record. The Blazers have won back-to-back matches including a 6-1 road win at Alabama State their last time out this past Sunday. MSU holds a commanding 30-3 series lead against UAB highlighted by a 20-match win streak and a 19-2 record in Starkville.
The Bulldogs won the last year's encounter against the Blazers 4-3 at home with Jayna Clemens contributing a singles win while Maria Rizzolo and Alessia Tagliente were part of tandems that helped Mississippi State secure the early doubles point.
Arkansas State heads to town with a 4-2 record and coming off a 6-1 road win at Saint Louis on Friday. The Bulldogs are a perfect 7-0 in the series and have outscored the Red Wolves 44-8 in those outings. MSU shutout Arkansas State 7-0 during the previous meeting in Starkville in 2023 with Rizzolo earning a straight-set singles victory in that triumph.Â
Tagliente leads the Bulldogs with nine singles wins this season. The senior from Italy has won her last six singles matches dating back to the fall to go along with a team-best five consecutive doubles victories. Freshman Carolina Troiano has clinched half of Mississippi State's matches so far this season.Â
