Bulldogs’ Conference Unbeaten Streak Ends In Battle At Arkansas
October 05, 2025 | Soccer
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The top two teams in the SEC traded punches all night on Sunday, but No. 7 Arkansas rallied back to defeat No. 13 Mississippi State, 4-2, in Fayetteville.
The two teams are the only SEC squads to beat the other since the back half of the 2023 season. MSU won last year's matchup in Starkville, but Arkansas took the 2023 meeting on their home pitch.
"I'm really proud of the performance from these ladies, and more importantly the fight," head coach Nick Zimmerman said. "You know, coming to Arkansas is not an easy place to play. They haven't lost here in five years. To come out and start the way we did and then respond to keep getting chances throughout the game was really encouraging. Their goalkeeper did a really good job for them, and we hit the crossbar multiple times and had some chances. This is a great game for us to see where we're at and get back to work."
State (9-2-1, 4-1-1 SEC) jumped out to an early two-goal lead within the first 10 minutes of the game. Adia Symmonds sprung Zoe Main for a breakaway strike in the third minute. Just three minutes later, Tatum Borman beat her defender and launched a shot from outside the box and tucked it just under the crossbar.
Arkansas (7-2-3, 5-0-1 SEC) got one goal back on a penalty kick in the 34th minute. The Bulldogs nearly had a third first-half goal in the 45th minute, but the ball did not completely cross the goal line before an Arkansas defender forced it back out of the goal frame. Goalkeeper Sarah Wommack made four saves in the first half.
Things took a turn in the second half as Arkansas scored three unanswered goals for a comeback victory. The Razorbacks tied the match early in the second half, scoring in the 47th minute. In the 57th minute, Arkansas took the lead on a header off a free kick, and the Razorbacks tallied one final goal in the 82nd minute on a breakaway.
Mississippi State outshot the Razorbacks, 22-14, but the Razorback keeper made seven saves in second half to keep the Bulldogs off the board. Throughout the match, State hit the crossbar twice and saw two goals saved by Arkansas defenders on the goal line.
With the loss, MSU saw a few notable streaks come to an end. It was State's first SEC loss since losing at Arkansas in the final match of the 2023 regular season, a school-record run of 15 games. Ally Perry's five-game goal streak, which was the second-longest in program history, also came to an end.
The Bulldogs will now travel to Florida on Friday, Oct. 10. The Bulldogs and Gators will kick off in Gainesville at 6 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
