January 08, 2025 | Softball
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's Sara Phillips was tabbed to the D1Softball D100 Freshman Watch List on Wednesday morning. The watch list includes 100 players but does not attempt to rank the individuals included.
Â
The highly-touted pitcher was considered the No. 18 prospect in the class by Extra Inning Softball when she signed with State, and she was the outlet's No. 12 pitcher nationally. Softball America labeled her a four-star prospect and the No. 13 pitcher in the class.
Â
Playing at Hewitt-Trussville High School, Phillips won three state titles, was a four-time All-State Tournament Team selection and three-time First Team All-State honoree. In 2023, she was a MaxPreps First Team High School All-American. Her high school career saw her post a 72-4 record with 703 strikeouts. On the travel circuit, Phillips led the Birmingham Thunderbolts to a third-place finish at the 2021 PGF 16U Premier Nationals.
Â
This fall, Phillips was MSU's most-used arm in fall ball, making five appearances and throwing 16.0 innings. She struck out 15 batters in that time while recording a 1.69 ERA.
Â
Phillips and the Bulldogs will open the season in just under a month at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Florida. State last played in the event in Samantha Ricketts' first season as head coach, winning the tournament title in 2020. Opening Day 2025 is set for Feb. 7 as the Bulldogs meet Texas Tech and Penn State to begin the tournament.
