January 05, 2025 | Women's Basketball
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State came out firing in the opening quarter, but could not sustain their dominant start, as the Bulldogs fell to the second-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks, 95-68.
The Bulldogs came out of the gates on fire, as the team shot 53.3 percent from the floor and 66.7 from beyond the arc. Leading State was Jerkaila Jordan, who scored 12 of State's 22 first quarter points. Heading into the second quarter, the Bulldogs held a 22-13 lead.
Jordan continued her excellent play in the second quarter, as she entered the locker room with 16 points, the most she has scored in a single half all season. Her shooting percentages remained at 55 percent from the floor. However, the second quarter also saw the Gamecocks take the lead with two minutes remaining in the half, and they would never relinquish the lead.
Destiney McPhaul also had an excellent game for State. She finished with 14 points, with 10 of those coming in the second half. McPhaul scored on 6-9 shooting and knocked down her only triple she attempted. This marked McPhaul's sixth double-digit performance.
Eniya Russell also finished in double figures for the 13th time this year. The Baltimore native picked up 12 points in the contest. Madina Okot brought in a team-high eight rebounds, with six coming in State's dominant first quarter. Denim DeShields dished out a team-best three assists.
The Bulldogs are set to return to action in Humphrey Coliseum on Thursday, January 9 when they host the No. 9/10 Oklahoma Sooners. The game will be broadcast on SECN+ at 6:30 p.m.
