MSU comeback falls just short.
TEMPE, Ariz. – Mississippi State made a furious second-half charge but was unable to complete the comeback as the Bulldogs ultimately fell 30-23 to Arizona State at Mountain America Stadium on Saturday night.
MSU, who trailed 30-3 late in the third quarter, scored a trio of late touchdowns to make it a one-possession game. However, that's as close as the Bulldogs could get.
Quarterback Blake Shapen threw for 268 yards and two touchdowns for State. Kevin Coleman Jr. had 103 yards receiving and a score.
On the defensive side of the football, safety Isaac Smith led the way with 17 tackles for the Bulldogs.
Kyle Ferrie's 32-yard field goal served as State's lone score of the ballgame over the first two-and-a-half quarters of play. Over that span, Arizona State was able to take control of the contest. However, the Bulldogs rallied to give themselves a chance.
Keyvone Lee, who ended the evening as MSU's leading rusher with 35 yards on the ground, made the score 30-10 with his six-yard touchdown run late in the third period. The State surge then continued right on into the fourth quarter.
Shapen found Davon Booth on a 15-yard touchdown strike with 13:09 to play to get MSU within 14 points at 30-16. Then, with 5:27 left, Shapen and Coleman hooked up on an 80-yard pass play that gave the Dawgs a very realistic shot at a come-from-behind win. However, State wouldn't get the football back as Arizona State maintained possession the rest of the way to claim victory.
Next up for State…
MSU returns home to face Toledo on Saturday, Sept. 14. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at Davis Wade Stadium, and the game is set to be televised by either ESPN2 or ESPNU.
