Endicott Among Top 10 After First Round In Knoxville
September 06, 2024 | Men's Golf
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Led by Garrett Endicott, Mississippi State men's golf opened the 2023-24 season on Friday at the Visit Knoxville Collegiate. State sits in a tie for seventh after one round and shot 2-over as a team.
Â
Five teams, four of them from the SEC, shot below par on the tournament's first day with LSU leading at 12-under through 18 holes.
Â
Endicott is among the top 10 individuals, carding a 3-under 67 to start his junior year with six birdies. It was his 19th career round in the 60s and the 42nd round of par or better in his time at State. He now stands alone in fifth place in MSU career history for par or better rounds.
Â
Behind him, Josep Serra carded a 1-under 69. Serra jumped out a 4-under mark through 13 holes, but he bogeyed three of his final five holes. In opposite fashion, Alejandro Fierro battled back from a rocky start. After sitting at 5-over at the turn, the sophomore carded four birdies on the back nine to finish at 1-over.
Â
"We learned a lot about our guys today," head coach Dusty Smith said. "They showed a lot of fight despite it not being our best day. We made a lot of sloppy mistakes that need to be cleaned up if we want to be the best team we can be. I'm really proud of Fierro and his fight as well as Josep and Garrett being steady all day."
Â
David Beard, playing as an individual, is tied with Fierro for 36th. Meanwhile, Dain Richie and Ugo Malcor both carded their first birdies as Bulldogs while making their State debuts.
Â
MSU will begin teeing off at 8:20 a.m. CT on Saturday from the No. 1 tee with Malcor leading off. Beard will be in the second to last group of individuals and will take the tee box at 12:20 p.m. Live results will be available on Scoreboard.
