Bulldogs Complete First Day Of SEC Challenge

TUSCALOOSA, Ala., - The first day of Mississippi State men's tennis for the 2024-25 season is in the books.
Junior Michal Novansky and sophomores Roberto Ferrer Guimaraes, Marshall Landry and Radomir Tomic represented the Bulldogs on the opening day of the SEC Challenge on Friday at Alabama's Roberta Alison Baumgardner Indoor Tennis Facility.
Novansky and Tomic teamed up in doubles to start the day but dropped a heartbreaker to the Crimson Tide duo of Roan Jones and Andrii Zimnokh 8-7(4) on their homecourt.
Tomic and Ferrer Guimaraes helped set the tone early for State in singles. Tomic took the first set against Zimnokh – ranked 62nd nationally – 6-3 but was unable to sustain the early momentum, falling in the final two sets 7-5, 6-3.
Ferrer Guimaraes was also a first-set winner over Oklahoma's Oscar Lacides but the Sooner rallied in the final two sets to win 6-3, 7-5.
All four Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday starting with doubles at 10 a.m. Novanksy and Tomic will join forces again against Noah Schlagenhauf and Isac Stromberg of Ole Miss while Americans Ferrer Guimaraes and Landry meet Vanderbilt's Dylan Charlap and Callum Markowitz.
The MSU quartet will also compete in singles later Saturday afternoon. Tomic takes on Schlagenhauf while Novansky tangles with Stromberg the Crimson Draw. The White Draw sees Ferrer Guimares battle against Charlap and Landry matches up against Markowitz.
The Bulldog team of Carles Hernandez and Dusan Milanovic downed Schlagenhauf and Stromberg 6-4 during the spring. Hernandez also topped Stromberg in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 in singles while Benito Sanchez Martinez won 6-2, 6-4 over Schlagenhauf.
