#StateToTheShow: St. Clair, Wesley Secure Series
August 05, 2024 | Softball
STARKVILLE – Brylie St. Clair and Aspen Wesley played key defensive roles in the Texas Monarchs' series victory over the Coastal Bend Tidal Wave over the weekend.
Wesley started the opening game on Thursday night, tossing 6.0 innings and keeping the Monarchs in the game until they were able to win it with a walk-off homer. She struck out five, including striking out the side in order in the fourth inning after the Monarchs had taken a 4-3 lead.
St. Clair played errorless defense, recording nine putouts in center field. In the 8-0 victory in the series finale, she recorded two outfield assists. In the first inning, she threw out former Ole Miss outfielder Tate Whitley at the plate to preserve the shutout. Later in the fourth, she turned a double play to end the inning, catching a fly ball and doubling Whitley off at second base.
At the plate, St. Clair collected two singles and a walk along with laying down a sacrifice bunt in the series. On Sunday, she beat out a bunt single, stole second and came around to score.
After winning the AFP Champion Cup last week, Chloe Malau'ulu and the Oklahoma City Spark closed their season with a two-game exhibition series against All-Army Softball. Malau'ulu was 1-for-2 in the series with one run scored.
Professional softball in the United States consists of three different leagues. Two play with traditional, location-based teams, the Association of Fastpitch Professionals (AFP), which concluded last week with its Champion Cup, and Women's Pro Fastpitch (WPF). Two Bulldogs are currently members in each of these leagues. The third organization is Athletes Unlimited (AU), which does not have traditional teams. Instead, athletes compete as individuals earning fantasy sports style points. Teams are re-drafted by the leading players each week in Athletes Unlimited, where one Bulldog is active. AU play began on July 26, and a recap of that action is available here.
