McCloyen Punches Ticket To Finals
August 30, 2024 | Track & Field
LIMA, Peru- Roury McCloyen made a big effort on his last throw to qualify for the discus final at the World U20 Championships in Peru.
The Mississippi State freshman record holder had a solid opening mark of 57.05m, placing him in the top five for the round duration. As the last thrower in the flight, his first throw concluded the first round and placed him fifth overall.
Once his turn came in the second round, McCloyen entered the ring maintaining his fifth-place spot. He fouled his second-round attempt, keeping his fifth-place spot.
On his third-round attempt, McCloyen seized his opportunity to make finals with a mark of 58.12m (190' 8"). This throw was the second farthest in the round and secured his fifth-place position.
The event is contested by two qualification groups of 15 athletes each. Athletes that throw 60.00m and above receive an automatic berth, or "big Q". The next farthest throwers then fill the field until 12 athletes are entered.
McCloyen earned a "little q", by qualifying by distance rather than by automatic mark, seeded ninth among the 12. He and countryman Bryce Ruland will be the sole Americans to compete in the final. The final will be contested on Aug. 31 at 4 pm CT.
Live results and streaming will be available on Peacock and WorldAthletics.org along with MSU's track and field webpage and social media feeds.
