McCloyen To Make Waves In Peru

LIMA, Peru – Roury McCloyen will compete at the U20 World Championships in Lima, Peru on Aug. 30. He will be the only Bulldog at the championship.
The Mississippi native made Team USA by winning discus at the USATF U20 Championship in Eugene, Oregon this past June. He set a personal-best of 60.28m (197-09) on his first attempt, winning the event by three feet.
His mark sets him as #10 in the world in the classification, the highest-placing American in the event.
"I'm excited for him and I think he is going to go there and surprise a lot of people," associate head coach April Thomas said. "His practices have been going great and he is starting to figure some things out."
During his first collegiate season, McCloyen broke the freshman shot put and discus records a combined seven times. He closed the season with personal bests of 19.29 m and 56.44 m, respectively. These marks place him at No. 2 all-time in both events in school history. Â He was named Second Team All-American at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships, where he was also one of two freshmen to qualify in both shot put and discus.
McCloyen is the first Mississippi State ring thrower to compete on the world stage. He joins alumni Marco Arop, Curtis Thompson and Tyriq Horsford as athletes who represented their home countries in the international junior circuit in recent history.
McCloyen will be competing in Qualification-Group A at 11:55 AM CT on Aug. 30. The final will be contested at 4 pm CT the following day. Live results and streaming will be available on Peacock and WorldAthletics.org along with MSU's track and field webpage and social media feeds.
