Borges Begins Pair Of Olympic Draws
July 26, 2024 | Men's Tennis, Olympic Games
PARIS, France – Fresh off his first ATP 250 Tour title, Nuno Borges will represent Mississippi State and his home nation of Portugal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Borges will play in both men's singles and doubles, partnering with childhood friend Francisco Cabral in the pairs event. He is the first athlete to represent State in tennis at the Olympic Games.
The initial draws give world-No. 42 Borges a challenging road. In the singles bracket, his first match will come against No. 36 Mariano Navone of Argentina on Saturday, July 27. He will be the second match on Court 10. Should he win that meeting, Borges would face the winner between No. 17 Lorenzo Musetti (ITA), who is the No. 11 overall Olympic seed, and No. 30 Gael Monfils (FRA). Borges has never played any of those three individuals in his career.
On the doubles side of things, Borges and Cabral will open the tournament against Greece's Petros and Stefanos Tsitsipas on Sunday, July 28 at a time yet to be determined. The Tsitsipas brothers are both ranked among the top 100 in the world in doubles, and Cabral is No. 81. With a victory, the Portuguese pair would advance to face the winner of the match between Germany and No. 7-seed Croatia.
Playing on the clay courts of Roland-Garros will be an advantage for Borges, however. He boasts a 95-46 career singles record on clay and just defeated the "King of Clay" himself, Rafael Nadal, to claim his first ATP title last weekend. Together, Borges and Cabral are even better, posting a 61-16 record in doubles on clay courts, that includes a 25-match winning streak for the pair in 2022.
Borges is one of seven former NCAA men's tennis players at the Olympic Games and one of just three from the SEC. During his collegiate career at MSU, the Maia, Porto, native reached a No. 1 national ranking in both singles and doubles, and he was the 2019 NCAA singles runner-up. Borges closed his Bulldog career as the 2019 ITA National Player of the Year and ITA National Senior Player of the Year after earning five All-America honors and three SEC Player of the Year awards.
