Wesley Third Bulldog Bound For Professional Ranks
June 07, 2024 | Softball
SAN MARCOS, Texas – Mississippi State's Aspen Wesley has signed a professional contract with the newly formed Texas Monarchs, which will compete in Women's Pro Fastpitch (WPF). She joins her teammate from the last four years, Brylie St. Clair, on the Monarchs' first roster.
Â
Wesley is the third member of the 2024 Mississippi State softball team to sign a professional contract this summer, joining St. Clair and Madisyn Kennedy (Florida Vibe). She becomes the 26th professional player in program history, and head coach Samantha Ricketts has now mentored 14 of those pros over her decade-plus spent in Starkville.
Â
The 2024 trio were all also members of the Bulldogs' 2020 and 2021 teams, which held a school-record seven future pros on the roster (Fa Leilua, Mia Davidson-Smith, Annie Willis and Chloe Malau'ulu).
Â
"I'm thrilled for Aspen as she embarks on her professional career," Ricketts said. "She has worked tirelessly as a Bulldog to earn this opportunity to represent MSU and her home state at the highest level. Aspen will remain a role model for young girls across Mississippi and in her tribe as she pursues her journey as a professional softball player."
Â
Wesley is coming off of a Second Team All-SEC selection in her final collegiate season. The Philadelphia, Mississippi, native led the team in appearances, ERA, opposing batting average and wins while also leading the squad and setting career highs in strikeouts and innings pitched. She tied the school record with nine wins in SEC play this season, including a no-hitter at Ole Miss, and became the first Bulldog to hold SEC hitters below a .200 batting average in a season. Wesley also closed her career holding program records for NCAA Tournament wins and shutouts.
Â
"Playing professional softball has always been a dream since I could pitch, but I thought that would always be a dream," Wesley said. "I never thought it would happen, but the Lord has bigger and better plans. I'm so incredibly blessed to be playing pro, and I couldn't be more excited about representing MSU in this new adventure."
Â
Wesley and St. Clair will open the WPF season on June 20. The Texas Monarchs will join the Texas Smoke, Coastal Bend Tidal Wave and Hub City Adelitas for an eight-week schedule. The Monarchs will play the Tidal Wave and Adelitas in four-game series three times and the Smoke in two four-game series for a total of 32 games.
Â
The regular season will end on Aug. 11, and the WPF Championship series is slated to begin on Aug. 13.
