Kennedy Tabbed Second Team All-American
May 28, 2024 | Softball
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's Madisyn Kennedy has been named a Second Team All-American by D1Softball, the outlet announced on Tuesday. Kennedy is the 10th player in program history to earn All-America recognition, and her selection marks the 27th honor for the Bulldogs.
Â
The First Team All-SEC slugger had a career year in 2024, launching 17 homers while slugging .792 and driving in 56 runs. All three of those marks were among the top-10 single-season totals in school history. She also collected career highs in doubles (9), walks (26), total bases (99) and on-base percentage (.430) and her batting average (.312) was its highest since the shortened 2020 season (.333).
Â
Kennedy made the move from shortstop to first base this season where she started 45 games. She played in all but two contests with 50 total starts.
Â
The Montgomery, Alabama, native was even more impressive in conference play. She hit nine home runs in league games, which broke the school record, and drove in 27 runs, which was one shy of the school record. She also slugged a league-leading .762 in SEC games.
Â
Kennedy was among the top 30 nationally in total home runs, home runs per game, total RBIs, RBIs per game and slugging percentage. Her 1.222 OPS ranked third in the SEC.
Â
The career year saw Kennedy climb State's career record books as well. She finished her career as the fourth member of the 40-homer club in program history, and 17 of those home runs came in SEC games, which trailed only All-American catcher and SEC career-record-holder Mia Davidson. She tallied 35 multi-RBI games in her career, which was fourth all-time, and 65 two-out RBIs, which was second in program history.
Â
Throughout the season, she posted a career-long 25-game reached base streak that included every game in the month of March. In fact, she either homered or drew a walk in all but one game that month on her way to a 1.133 slugging percentage, .547 on-base percentage, 10 homers and 34 RBIs across 19 games. That stretch also saw her tie the school record for RBIs in a single game with seven against ULM thanks to a grand slam, a two-run homer and an RBI single.
Â
Since 2019, Mississippi State student-athletes have won eight All-America honors. Four of those honors have come under Samantha Ricketts as head coach. Notably, of the 10 previous Bulldogs to be named an All-American, Kennedy joins Keri McCallum as the only two to win their first career honor in the final season of their careers.
