May 02, 2024 | Men's Tennis, Track & Field
STARKVILLE – Carles Hernandez from men's tennis and Julia Lasley from women's track and field were selected as Mississippi State's winners of the Brad Davis Community Service Award by the Southeastern Conference on Thursday.
Hernandez and Lasley have each gone to great lengths to give their time and talents to helping charities throughout MSU, Starkville and Golden Triangle communities in addition to excelling in the classroom and their fields of play.
Hernandez helped hand out meals to those in need as part of the Starkville Strong: Neighbors Helping Neighbors program on multiple occasions. He also served meals in association with the Casserole Kitchen.
The senior from Crevillent, Spain also played tennis with students in MSU's ACCESS Program, which serves students with intellectual or developmental disabilities. He also spent time encouraging and inspiring children during an outing at Skate Odyssey in Starkville.
On the court, Hernandez has a team-best 15-5 singles record during dual match play and has a dozen doubles victories to his credit as well this spring. He has racked up 107 total victories so far in his career and produced the seventh-best dual match record in school history in 2023 with a 21-5 singles mark.
Lasley was a 2023 SEC Community Service Team selection and has volunteered her time helping with The Partnership Morning Dropoff numerous times and provided local middle school students with motivation and encouragement. She has also donated toys for a Toy Drive benefitting Sudduth Elementary School and skated and interacted with kids in Skate Odyssey's aftercare program.Â
The junior jumper from Anna, Illinois also helped distribute food to the less fortunate in the community with Starkville Strong Neighbors Helping Neighbors program as well as assisting with the TK Martin Fun Run.Â
Lasley is a two-time SEC Spring Honor Roll honoree and opened the indoor track season in January by tying her personal-best height of 3.36m in the pole vault. She had a career-best 3.47m in the outdoor pole vault.
Both Hernandez and Lasley receive $5,000 post-graduate scholarships from the SEC. They will also be in the running to be the male and female SEC Community Service Leaders of the Year. That honor will be announced later this month with the winners each receiving a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship.
