Endicott, Logan Shine In Second Round At NCAA Regional
May 14, 2024 | Men's Golf
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Stellar performances from Garrett Endicott and Hunter Logan lifted the No. 37 Mississippi State men's golf team to just 2-over at the West Lafayette Regional on Tuesday where the Bulldogs sit in sixth place.Â
State shot a combined 7-under 281 in the second round and now sits just four strokes back from the cut line entering Wednesday's final round. The top five teams after three rounds will advance to the NCAA Championship. Â
The Bulldogs' 7-under showing was the second-best round of the entire field on the day trailing only host, Purdue. It also is good for MSU's third best NCAA Tournament round of all-time, trailing only a 276 in the opening round of the Morgan Hill Regional in 2023 and a 280 in the opening round of the 2022 New Haven Regional.Â
Endicott shot a 7-under 65 on his own. It stands as the best individual round of the regional to this point and the lowest round of his sophomore campaign. He carded four birdies on the back nine to go 3-under at the turn. He would add to that total with an even stronger front nine that saw him card two birdies and shoot his first eagle of the postseason on the No. 4 hole.Â
The sophomore jumped 26 spots on the leaderboard Tuesday and is now tied for second individually. He's three strokes back of the individual lead ahead of Wednesday's final round, and regardless of if his team advances, the top individual from a non-qualifying team will still move on to the NCAA Championship.Â
"I just went out there and stuck to my gameplan, and the putts started dropping," said Endicott. "I faced a little adversity here and there, but I just pushed through, tried to make pars and hoped the birdies went in, and they did. This semester hasn't been quite this easy, so to finally show what I'm capable of out here in the moment that matters feels great."Â
Logan had an impressive performance of his own, birdieing half of his holes and shooting 5-under on the day. After firing even-par on the front nine, Logan birdied six of his final nine holes including three straight on Holes 1-3. Logan's 5-under 67 is the best round of his NCAA Tournament career and marks the second time this postseason he has shot a 67 in the second round. The graduate student is 3-under overall and in a tie for 10th. Â
Elsewhere for the Bulldogs, Pedro Cruz Silva, Josep Serra and Harrison Davis, who substituted into the lineup for the second round, combined for six birdies on the day. Cruz Silva is State's third highest placing golfer on the leaderboard in a tie for 37th. Â
The final round is set to begin at 7 a.m. CT on Wednesday. Should State close the four-stroke gap to make the cut, the Bulldogs would advance to their fifth NCAA Championship as a team and make their first back-to-back appearances in program history. Should Endicott alone advance, he would be the fifth State golfer to reach the NCAA Championship as an individual.Â
