Trio Of Bulldogs Earns All-SEC Honors
May 10, 2024 | Softball
STARKVILLE – The Southeastern Conference announced its coaches' All-SEC teams on Friday morning, and three Mississippi State players were recognized. Madisyn Kennedy is a First Team selection, while Aspen Wesley and Sierra Sacco were tabbed to the Second Team.
Â
It is the first all-conference honor for Kennedy and Wesley, but Sacco has been named all-conference in every season of her career, picking up First Team All-Conference USA honors in 2022 and 2023. The selections mark just the sixth time that State has seen three or more players land on the first or second team in on season and the first since 2019.
Â
Kennedy, State's first First Team honoree since Mia Davidson, broke Davidson's school record with a league-leading nine home runs in conference play. She also led the SEC in slugging percentage and was second in OPS and RBIs in league games. The Bulldog first baseman is now just the fourth player in program history with 40 career home runs after hitting 17 to this point in 2024.
Â
The Montgomery, Alabama, native was named Softball America's top first baseman in the country in both March and April. She turned in an astounding 1.333 slugging percentage, .547 on-base percentage, 10 home runs and 34 RBIs in March alone, and she currently ranks among the top 30 players nationally in OPS, home runs, RBIs and slugging percentage.
Â
Wesley also set program records in conference play, winning nine games and becoming the first Bulldog to hold opponents below a .200 batting average in league games. Her nine wins ranked second in the SEC, and her 82 strikeouts were sixth. Her 82 strikeouts in conference play were nearly a single-season career high on their own, and she currently has fanned 123 batters, breaking last year's mark of 86 overall.
Â
The Philadelphia, Mississippi, native was twice named NCAA Softball's National Pitcher of the Week. She was the only pitcher to shutout Georgia's offense all season, one of her three shutouts in league play this year. She started strong and arguably ended even stronger. Wesley threw her first career no-hitter in her first conference outing of the year, striking out nine at Ole Miss. She then closed the regular season tossing four consecutive complete games at Missouri and against Georgia, going 3-1 in those contests with 28 strikeouts and two walks over 27.0 innings.
Â
Sacco led State in batting average, multi-hit games and on-base percentage this season, and her .497 on-base percentage was fifth in the SEC. She ranks 15th nationally, drawing 0.82 walks per game, and was fourth overall in the SEC in free passes. She stole 19 bases, which ranked third in the conference without being caught once, and she rounded the bases for 51 runs, which was fifth in the league.
Â
The Marrero, Louisiana, native ranked ninth in batting average in league games and was perfect defensively. She has not committed an error in 134 consecutive chances defensively, dating back to last season at Louisiana Tech.
Â
The Bulldogs now await their postseason destination. The NCAA Selection Show is Sunday, May 12 at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
