Kids Coach - Logan Shepherd
April 06, 2024 | Baseball
Kid Coach is a partnership between Children's of Mississippi and the Mississippi State Bulldogs to salute pediatric patients. Their inspirational stories remind us just how truly courageous these young people are.
Â
This week's Children's of Mississippi Kid Coach is Logan Shepherd of Columbus, MS.
Â
Before he was born, doctors discovered Logan had a bladder blockage. When his mom was just 17 weeks pregnant, maternal fetal medicine specialists at Children's of Mississippi performed in-utero surgery to place a shunt in Logan's bladder. This was to preserve his kidney function and allow amniotic fluid to drain so his lungs could develop.
Â
After birth, he was diagnosed with Eagle-Barrett syndrome, also called Prune Belly syndrome, a rare condition characterized by missing abdominal muscles and bladder problems. When he was a year old, surgeons at Children's of Mississippi performed an operation to transfer muscles from his thighs to his abdomen. He also has only one kidney. Currently, Logan sees pediatric nephrologists and urologists at Children's for specialized care.
Â
Now three years old, his mom says he's a healthy little boy despite his condition. He adores his big brother, Preston. He also loves being outside and all "boy" things!
Â
Have fun at Saturday's game, Logan. Your friends at Children's of Mississippi are cheering for you!
