Kennedy Named Softball America’s Top First Baseman In March
April 02, 2024 | Softball
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's Madisyn Kennedy has been tabbed the top first baseman in the country by Softball America for the month of March.
Softball America updates its position power rankings each month, and they are determined by offensive and defensive statistics, the eye test on the field, strength of schedule and each player's value to their team success.
Kennedy hit .378 in the month of March with a 1.133 slugging percentage that rose her season slugging percentage to 1.027, which is now a top-three mark nationally. She has driven in 34 RBIs just in the past month alone, and her 45 RBIs this season are seventh nationally.
The fifth-year player from Montgomery, Alabama, did most of her damage with the long ball, blasting 10 home runs in March. That's more in one month of play than she'd had in any prior full season of her career. She is now one of seven players nationally with an OPS of 1.500 or better, and her 1.527 mark in that regard ranks fifth.
In all, Kennedy's contributions have helped No. 16/16 Mississippi State become a top-10 offense nationally and a top-three unit in the SEC. The Bulldogs are averaging 7.18 runs per game, which is 10th in the nation, and they are among the top 20 in on-base percentage, slugging percentage, batting average, RBIs, walks and OPS.
State will travel to UAB and No. 22/25 South Carolina this week for a four-game road trip. The Bulldogs return home on April 10 to host South Alabama before welcoming No. 6/4 Tennessee to Nusz Park on April 12-14.
