Justin Foscue Called Up To MLB
April 02, 2024 | Baseball
The former first round pick is heading to the Rangers
STARKVILLE – After just missing the Opening Day roster, the Texas Rangers' No. 5-ranked prospect and former Mississippi State baseball player Justin Foscue received the call to the majors on Tuesday (April 2).
Â
Foscue is the 69th Diamond Dawg player to reach MLB and the first to be called up to make his Major League debut since June 26, 2023, when the Baltimore Orioles called up Jordan Westburg. Foscue is the first Bulldog to get called up for his Major League debut this season.
Â
The infielder from Huntsville, Alabama is scheduled to join the Rangers in St. Petersburg, Florida for the series against the Tampa Bay Rays. He is set to become the 16th Diamond Dawg to make his first MLB appearance since 2016.
Â
Foscue is a .275 career hitter in MiLB and has appeared in three games for the Round Rock Express this season.
Â
On the short list of Mississippi State baseball student-athletes to appear at the College World Series twice, Foscue earned All-America honors from all seven publications after a breakout sophomore season in 2019. A three-year starter, Foscue made the move from third base to second base in 2019 and didn't skip a beat. In 62 starts, he hit .331 with 36 extra-base hits – including 14 home runs – and struck out only 32 times in 275 at-bats.
Â
Spending the 2019 summer with the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, Foscue made 14 appearances with 12 starts for Team USA. He tied for the team lead in doubles (3) during the summer and picked up right where he left off to start the 2020 season. In the shortened 2020 campaign, Foscue owned five multi-hit games and four multi-RBI games. He posted at least one RBI in the first eight games of the season and produced an RBI in 11 of 16 games.
Â
While at Mississippi State, Foscue owned a career .380 career on-base percentage in 141 games played (131 starts) with 100 runs scored and 96 RBIs. In 594 career plate appearances, Foscue has struck out in just 9.6% of his plate appearances (57 strikeouts) and walked in 11.3% of those (67 walks). In 83 starts over the last two seasons, he posted a .320 batting average and reached base in 70 of those contests.
Â
As the No. 14 overall pick, Foscue is tied for the fifth-highest pick in Mississippi State history, behind only Will Clark (1985; 2nd), B.J. Wallace (3rd; 1992), Paul Maholm (8th; 2003) and Hunter Renfroe (13th; 2013) and tied with Will Bednar (14th; 2021). He was the 12th Diamond Dawg drafted by the Texas Rangers, which is the most by a single organization in program history.
