April 15, 2024 | Women's Golf
BELLEAIR, Fla. – For the second year in a row, the Mississippi State women's golf team is headed back to the finals of the SEC Championship. The Bulldogs put together two match play victories against Kentucky and LSU to advance.
The opening match of the day against Kentucky saw the Bulldogs take the win 3-1-1. All three golfers that earned individual points for the Bulldogs never trailed in their matchups. The most impressive performance of the opening match belonged to Avery Weed, as she cruised to a 5&3 victory against Kentucky's Marissa Wenzler to win the initial point for State.
Julia Lopez Ramirez secured the second point for State in her matchup with a 2&1 victory over Laney Frye, who finished third in the stroke play portion of the tournament. Izzy Pellot scored the eventual winning point for State when she finished her match 3&2 against Cathryn Brown. Chiara Horder finished tied in her matchup, as she was tied through 15 holes when Pellot earned the deciding point.
Mississippi State then advanced to the semifinal round of match play against LSU, which featured high drama. The first point earned for the Bulldogs belonged to Chiara Horder. Throughout most of her matchup, Horder trailed to LSU's Taylor Riley. However, after she won holes 13 and 14, Horder would gain the one-hole advantage and hold strong, as she finished her contest with a 2&1 victory.
Weed's matchup was filled with drama throughout and even featured one of the best shots of the day. Weed, who never held a lead until the 14th hole, was in a tight battle with LSU's Latanna Stone throughout the day. Stone, who led most of the match, found herself tied with Weed as the two headed to the 18th green. With the pressure at its peak and Weed staring at a 30-foot putt for victory, the freshman from Ocean Springs nailed the long birdie putt to secure the second point for the Bulldogs with the 1UP victory.
Izzy Pellot once again had a strong showing in the semifinal matchup. Pellot gained an early lead on the first hole but fell back into a tie after LSU's Aine Donegan secured a win on the second hole. However, Pellot won the third hole, and then never relinquished her lead. She finished her contest after earning the 2&1 victory.
In one of the most prolific matchups of the tournament, the fourth match saw the No. 4 amateur in the world in Julia Lopez Ramirez matchup with the No. 1 amateur, Ingrid Lindblad. Early in the contest, Lindblad held a three-hole advantage against the junior from Malaga, Spain. However, Julia would not lose a hole on the back nine, as she picked up wins on holes 11, 14 and 16. The matchup was eventually scored as a tie when Pellot hit the winning putt of her matchup.
The Bulldogs will be back in action tomorrow when they take on the Texas A&M Aggies in the finals of the SEC Championship. Tee time is set for 9 a.m. CT, and will broadcast live on the SEC Network.
