Women's Golf Set for SEC Championship
April 11, 2024 | Women's Golf
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State women's golf begins its postseason journey on Friday as they travel to Belleair, Florida to compete in the 2024 SEC Championship.
Â
The unique format of the championship involves stroke and match play over the five days of the tournament. The first three days feature three rounds of stroke play, while the final two days are match play. Match play will see five golfers from two teams paired head-to-head. Whichever team has three or more golfers win the majority of their holes will advance to the next round. The SEC Champion will be named after the final match on Tuesday.
Â
State fields a familiar five for the SEC Championship. The group begins with the 2023 SEC Individual Champion, Julia Lopez Ramirez. The defending champ carded two rounds in the 60s in the SEC Championship last year to finish the stroke play portion of the tournament at four-under par. This season, Lopez Ramirez is currently shooting for an average of 71, which is the fifth best average in the conference.
Â
Avery Weed will hold the second spot in the lineup for State. The freshman will be appearing in her first SEC Championship but has earned the opportunity through her stellar play. Weed shot for an average of 72.65 throughout the regular season, which ranked second among the Bulldog squad and sixth among all freshman across the conference. Weed earned a career best runner-up finish at the Nexus Collegiate Invitational, the best finish for a freshman since Julia Lopez Ramirez in 2022.
Â
Izzy Pellot will be making her second appearance in the SEC Championship. In her two seasons, Pellot has carded 57 rounds. She follows only Lopez Ramirez in rounds played as a Bulldog. Her best finish this season came in MSU's home event, The Ally, where she finished T17 to secure her seventh-career top-20 finish.
Â
Surapa Janthamunee will also be making her second appearance in the conference championship tournament. SJ has set numerous personal records this season, including best finish (2), lowest round (67, -5) and lowest tournament score (211, -5). In the 2023 SEC tournament, SJ finished 2-1 in match play, with her sole loss coming in the tiebreaker holes.
Â
Rounding out the Mississippi State lineup will be Chiara Horder. Horder will be making her first appearance in the SEC tournament but is no stranger to success in postseason play. Horder recorded a top-20 individual finish in the Big 12 Women's Championship her freshman year. Her sophomore year, Horder finished the NCAA Pullman Regional at six-under par with two rounds in the 60s.
Â
The Bulldogs will tee off beginning at 8:10 a.m. on Friday. State is matched up with Georgia and Kentucky in the opening round. The final two days of the SEC Championship will be broadcast. Monday's quarter and semifinals matchup will be transmitted on SECN+, while Tuesday's finals will be broadcasted on SECN.
