March 05, 2024 | Women's Basketball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southeastern Conference announced on Tuesday that graduate student center Jessika Carter and senior guard Jerkaila Jordan each earned Second Team All-SEC honors following a vote by the conference's head coaches.Â
Â
Mississippi State is one of five programs with multiple First or Second Team selections and has totaled four All-SEC selections under head coach Sam Purcell.Â
Â
Jordan and Carter lived up to their preseason expectations and helped Mississippi State record back-to-back 20-plus win seasons.Â
Â
The latest All-SEC selection marks the third for Carter after she was named to the Second Team in both 2020 and 2023. She has maintained a double-double average with career-best marks with 14.8 points and 10.2 rebounds in 31.8 minutes per contest this season.Â
Â
The Waverly Hall, Ga. native became one of three players in program history to eclipse 1,500 career points and 1,000 career rebounds this season – joining multiple time All-SEC selections LaToya Thomas and Teaira McCowan. Her now 1,688 career points rank sixth, while her 1,089 rebounds and 235 blocks are both third in the program record books.Â
Â
Carter would be program's first since McCowan in 2018-19 to post a double-double average or maintain a 10-plus rebound mark. She has recorded 13 double-doubles this season – which surpasses her previous season-best total of 10 – and stands as one of six players in the SEC to reach the double-digit mark. Her 41 career double-doubles ranks third in program history and second among active conference players.Â
Her 52.2 percent field-goal percentage ranks second in the SEC, while her rebound average is fourth in the conference and 25th nationally. Her points, minutes and blocks averages also rank in the top-10 among conference players. Carter was also recently named one of three finalists for the 2024 Gillom Trophy, which is awarded to the best college women's basketball player in the state of Mississippi.Â
Â
Jordan has established herself as one of the top guards in the conference with a team-high 16.2 points and 2.2 steals, in addition to career-best marks in rebounds, assists and minutes with 6.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists in 30.8 minutes per contest. She has led the team in points in 15 games and has scored 10-plus points in 25 of 31 contests this season.Â
Â
The only Bulldog to start all 31 games, Jordan excels on the defensive end with three-plus steals in 12 contests this season. She has also posted seven double-doubles this season and averaged 24.5 points, 4.0 steals, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 33.9 minutes per contest against top-10 opponents this season.Â
Â
Mississippi State will be the No. 8 seed and face No. 9 seed Texas A&M in Second Round of the SEC Women's Basketball Tournament on March 7 at 11 a.m. CT inside Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, S.C.
