March 21, 2024 | Women's Basketball
STARKVILLE – Graduate student guard Lauren Park-Lane set the single-season assist record and all nine players scored to propel Mississippi State to a wire-to-wire win, 84-47, over Georgia Tech in the First Round of the WBIT inside Humphrey Coliseum on Thursday.
"For Lauren [Park-Lane] to break the single-season assist record is a phenomenal accomplishment because she is a great young lady who deserves to leave here with her name in the record books." said head coach Sam Purcell on the achievement.
With the win, Mississippi State advances to the Second Round of the WBIT and will host No. 3 seed TCU on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
Park-Lane finished with six assists to break the previous program record of 202 set by Jazzmun Holmes in 2018-19. Senior guard Darrione Rogers added 16 points behind a 4-8 performance from three – her 11th game this season with three-plus threes made.
An 11-0 run over the first 5:20 minutes of action ensured that Mississippi State would never trail in the contest. The spark was capped off with a deep transition three from Rogers and forced a Yellow Jackets' timeout at the 4:40 mark of the first quarter. Mississippi State extended the margin to 20-7 at the end of the initial 10 minutes.
Mississippi State would use a 12-3 spurt midway through the second quarter to build a 37-16 lead with under a minute left in the first half. Brown-Hagger scored seven of the Bulldogs' final nine points of the first half to push the halftime margin to 39-18.
Mississippi State ended the contest on a 14-6 run to build its largest lead at the eventual final.
Mississippi State outscored Georgia Tech 41-6 in bench points - the most bench points scored under Purcell - and turned in 17 points off 14 forced turnovers. The Bulldogs dominated on the glass and finished with 44-30 advantage in the mark.
