March 17, 2024 | Men's Golf
STATESBORO, Ga. – The No. 25 Mississippi State men's golf team completed the 44th annual Schenkel Invitational in sixth place on Sunday. As a team, the Bulldogs shot 1-under 287 in the final round to finish tied with Wisconsin. MSU shot a combined 14-under 850 for the tournament.Â
"I thought there were a lot of positives this week," head coach Dusty Smith said. "It was good to be in the thick of things the entire week. It's very frustrating that we couldn't finish how we wanted to on the last three holes. We really need to get better at focusing throughout the entire round and finding a way to get that round in the house."Â
The Schenkel marks MSU's sixth tournament this year finishing in the top half of the field. State has also finished inside the top-10 in every team tournament this season.Â
Garrett Endicott was the Bulldog's highest finisher on the individual leaderboard. He carded five birdies in the closing round and finished tied for seventh. Endicott's even par finish in round three gives him a team-leading 13 rounds of par or better golf this season, and he has carded seven round in the 60s this year. It was his first top-10 finish of the year and the fifth of his MSU career.Â
Hunter Logan had the best individual round of the day for MSU, shooting a 3-under 69 and carding an eagle for the second straight tournament on the par-5 No. 7 tee. Logan has now shot a team-leading 10 rounds in the 60s this season.Â
Josep Serra was the second-highest finisher for State, finishing tied for 23rd. He shot even par on Sunday, going bogey-free for the first 16 holes. Alejandro Fierro carded three birdies on the day and ended the tournament in a tie for 36th place. Just behind him was Drew Wilson who finished tied for 45th alongside Logan. Wilson notched two birdies in the final round, as did Harrison Davis, who finished tied for 48th.Â
"We are always learning and growing and will be better for it in the long run," Smith continued. "We're looking forward to a good two weeks of preparation before we head to Augusta to our next event."Â
State will travel to golf's grandest stage, playing at the Augusta/Haskins Award Invitational on April 6-7 just four miles from the fabled Augusta National and The Master's. Following the event, student-athletes will have the opportunity to attend the first day of golf's most-prestigious major.Â
