Wilson’s Stellar Debut Paces State at Sharkey Collegiate
February 03, 2024 | Men's Golf
STATESBORO, Georgia– Four representatives of the No. 19 Mississippi State men's golf team completed their first two rounds of action at the Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate on Saturday. The Bulldog's collective effort was highlighted by a 7-under 65 in the second round from redshirt freshman Drew Wilson in his collegiate debut. Wilson's round was the lowest of the day by any golfer in the field.
He started the day off slowly, shooting 2-over in the opening round. From there though, the Potts Camp, Mississippi native turned on the jets. Starting on the back nine, Wilson opened his second round five birdies across his first nine tees, including three straight on holes Nos. 15-17.
From there, he would improve his standing even further by carding his first collegiate eagle on the par-5 first hole. He'd went on to close his round with eight consecutive pars, completing a bogey-free round.
After two rounds of action, Wilson currently stands as the highest placing Bulldog in the field. He is tied for second and five strokes back from the leader at 5-under overall.
Wilson's day was complemented by a solid day from Alejandro Fierro, who finished his outing with a 1-under 71 in the second round. Fierro's second round marks his second round under par this season.
Elsewhere for the Bulldogs, David Beard made his State debut and notched the first four birdies of his career over the course of two rounds. Bo Blanchard also carded two birdies of his own.
The Bulldog contingent will now set their eyes on Sunday's final round, with tee times yet to be announced.
