State earns 87-67 road win.
BATON ROUGE, La. – Mississippi State extended its winning streak to five games on Saturday night, topping the LSU Tigers 87-67 at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
The Bulldogs improved to 19-8 on the season and 8-6 in Southeastern Conference play. They currently hold the longest active winning streak in the Southeastern Conference.
Freshman guard Josh Hubbard led the Mississippi State offense with a career-high 32 points, becoming the first Bulldog to score 30 in a game since Iverson Molinar's 30-point performance at Kentucky during the 2021-22 season. The Madison, Mississippi native connected on six of his 12 attempts from three-point range and went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line.
Graduate center Tolu Smith III scored 19 points off the bench and neared a double-double with a game-high nine rebounds. Smith's efficient 8-for-14 shooting performance helped the Bulldogs to their highest scoring performance in SEC play this season.
Mississippi State's proficient offense helped it go into halftime with a 40-33 lead, closing the half on an 11-4 run. KeShawn Murphy added to the Bulldogs' scoring efforts, finishing with 11 points. Cameron Matthews scored eight. The Bulldogs outscored the Tigers 47-34 in the second half to propel them to the commanding victory.
The Bulldogs shot 46.2 percent from the field, 10-for-21 from three-point range and 17-for-22 from the free-throw line, while defensively they held LSU to 41.4 percent from the field, 3-for-17 from deep and 16-for-22 from the charity stripe. Mississippi State outrebounded LSU 37-34 and won the turnover battle 15-12.
Mississippi State will be back in action in Starkville on Tuesday, when the Dawgs take on No. 17 Kentucky in a white out at Humphrey Coliseum. Tip time is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT and the game will be aired on ESPN.
