State falls to Tennessee 33-14.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – For the third time this season, Mississippi State faced a Top-10 opponent on the road Saturday night at No. 7 Tennessee. Once again, the Bulldogs held their own against elite competition but eventually fell to the Volunteers 33-14.
State racked up 179 rushing yards as a team, including 125 yards and a touchdown on the ground from running back Davon Booth and an 18-yard scoring run from Johnnie Daniels, but it wasn't quite enough for the Bulldogs to take down the Vols.
Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava threw a pair of first-half touchdown passes to give his team an early 14-0 lead, and while the Bulldogs fought and never fell behind more than two possessions until midway through the fourth quarter, the Vols didn't trail on the way to their win.
Receiver Kevin Coleman Jr. had another strong night for State as he's done so many times this season. The talented pass catcher totaled 68 yards through the air and averaged 13.6 yards per catch. Coleman now has at least 50 yards receiving in every game but one this year.
On the defensive side for MSU, safety Isaac Smith had a monster night with 20 tackles, including half a tackle for loss. DeAgo Brumfield, Sulaiman Kpaka, Deonte Anderson and Brice Pollock also all had at least half a tackle for loss. Hunter Washington also had a good night defensively. He tallied six tackles plus had a forced fumble and fumble recovery for the Maroon and White.
Next Up for MSU…
Mississippi State will enjoy an off weekend before returning to action on Saturday, Nov. 23. That's when the Bulldogs will host the Missouri Tigers in State's final home game of the 2024 campaign. Kickoff time hasn't yet been set, but will be in an afternoon window between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. A television assignment also has yet to be announced.
