State Sends Two Doubles Teams To Semifinals

Mississippi State men's tennis had an impressive Friday in both the ITA Sectional Championships and the ITA Conference Masters Championships, pushing two doubles teams into the semifinals and a singles competitor into the quarterfinals.
No. 1 Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez downed two opponents in straight sets at the ITA Conference Masters Championships in Rome, Georgia to reach the semifinals.
After receiving a first-round bye, Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez went to work in the Round of 16 to secure a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Bucknell's Brendan McDonald and Amar Tahirovic. Then in the quarterfinals, the junior duo topped Mohammad Alkotop and David Martirosian of Utah State 6-1, 6-1.
Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez take on the Hawaii team of Quinn Snyder and Azuma Visaya on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.
Just to the south in Tallahassee, Florida, Niccolo Baroni and Mario Martinez Serrano experienced similar success in the second day of play at the ITA South Sectional Championships.
Baroni and Martinez Serrano topped Florida State's 47th-ranked Joshua Dous-Karpenschif and Erik Schiessl 7-6(8), 6-4 on their home court to qualify for the semifinals.
Baroni also enjoyed a ranked win in singles as well, topping Tennessee's 111th-ranked Alejandro Moreno 6-3, 6-1 to reach the quarterfinals where he'll take on No. 86 Oscar Pinto Sansano of Georgia on Saturday at 8 a.m. CT
Baroni and Martinez Serrano will also battle Indiana's 52nd-ranked tandem of Jip van Assendelft and Facundo Yunis at 11:15 a.m.
A win on Saturday by either Bulldog doubles duo would qualify that team to compete at the NCAA Individual Championships later this month in Waco, Texas.
