Bulldogs top Minutemen 45-20.
STARKVILLE – It was an incredibly successful homecoming Saturday in StarkVegas for Mississippi State.
MSU closed out its season-long three-game homestand by rolling past UMass 45-20 at Davis Wade Stadium. The Bulldogs racked up 463 yards of total offense and standout freshman quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. accounted for three total touchdowns to wrap the game in Maroon and White.
Van Buren finished with 222 yards passing and threw for a touchdown. He also ran for two scores. However, the sensational young signal caller was far from the only Bulldog to have a big day.
Jordan Mosley had 107 yards of receiving, while a trio of State running backs – Johnnie Daniels, Davon Booth and Xavier Gayten all had north of 65 yards of rushing with a touchdown each.
Daniels ran for a team-high 92 yards. Booth added 76 while Gayten totaled 69.
All the offense supported a strong Dawg defensive effort that saw State limit the Minutemen to only 10 points and 222 yards over the last three quarters.
For the MSU defense, linebacker Stone Blanton paced the Bulldogs with his 14 tackles. His fellow linebacker, Nic Mitchell, finished with 10 stops. Brylan Lanier had an interception for State, while Ty Cooper had a sack and Deonte Anderson and Kai McClendon had half a sack apiece.
Next Up for MSU…
Mississippi State returns to the road and faces Tennessee on Saturday, Nov. 9. Kickoff time at Neyland Stadium is set for 6 p.m. CT and the game will be televised by ESPN.
