Mississippi State Welcomes Mercer On Wednesday

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State women's basketball closes out its season-opening five-game homestand inside Humphrey Coliseum when it hosts Mercer on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.

Head Coach Sam Purcell will have the chance to earn the 50th win of his career and at Mississippi State. Purcell would be the fastest head coach to 50 wins at Mississippi State, reaching the mark in 73 games, which stands eight faster than the next.

Mississippi State leads the all-time series 3-2 overall and 2-1 inside Humphrey Coliseum. Mississippi State last played and defeated Mercer, 97-66, inside Humphrey Coliseum on Nov. 14, 2014.

Mercer enters the match up with a 2-2 record after it defeated North Carolina A&T, 46-38, on Sunday, Nov. 17. Head Coach Michelle Clark-Heard, who served in an Assistant A.D. of Women's Basketball / Assistant Coach role at Mississippi State in 2023-24, is in the midst of her first season at the helm. The Bears are also guided by Assistant Coach Blessing Freeman, formerly Blessing Chekwa, who played at Mississippi State from 2002-06.

Mississippi State's defense has been its calling card through the early portion of the season. The Bulldogs have limited its opponents to 43.5 points on 26.4 percent from the field and 25.3 percent from three through their first four games in 2024-25. The 26.4 percent opponent field-goal percentage defense leads the nation.

Mississippi State has held all four opponents under 30.0 percent from the field this season - Memphis 27.1, Alcorn State 28.3 and Alabama State 22.4 and Chattanooga 27.1. Mississippi State only allowed a program-record one point in the third quarter against Alabama State on Nov. 13. The 29 points allowed to Alabama State was the fifth-lowest total allowed to an opponent in program history.

Mississippi State is averaging 26.8 points off turnovers and has turned in 20 or more points in the category in three of its first four games.

Mississippi State is 21-1 in non-conference home games inside Humphrey Coliseum under Purcell. Mississippi State has won 11 of its last 12 non-conference games, excluding the SEC Tournament, dating back to the 2023-24 season. Mississippi State is 32-6 overall in such games over the last two seasons.

Mississippi State received 14 votes in the Week Three edition of the USA Today Coaches Top-25 poll, released on Tuesday.
