The Final Horn: State 80, Southeastern Louisiana 59
November 12, 2024 | Men's Basketball, Joel Coleman
A quick rundown of MSU’s win over the Lions.
THE BOTTOM LINE: An early second-half surge helped Mississippi State gain control and ultimately defeat Southeastern Louisiana 80-59 at Humphrey Coliseum on Tuesday night. After an 8-0 Lion run closed an 11-point Bulldog lead to just three at 40-37 by halftime, MSU responded with a 14-2 run out of the break to key a third straight win to open the season. State led by double figures for the majority of the second half, carried in large part by a strong defensive effort that saw the Maroon and White limit the Lions to just 29.6 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes of action.
KEY NUMBERS: One of the biggest figures of the night was 19. That's the number of turnovers the Bulldogs forced, and State took full advantage by scoring 16 points off of those turnovers. It was also a good night for the Dawgs in the paint. After being carried, in part, by strong three-point shooting in the first two games, State flexed its muscle near the basket against the Lions, outscoring the Lions 38-16 in the paint and outrebounding Southeastern Louisiana 41-37. Individually for the Dawgs, Josh Hubbard once again shined with 23 points, five assists and a couple of boards. Kanye Clary and KeShawn Murphy also scored in double figures for State, totaling 12 and 10 respectively.
