MSU Earns Eight More Wins At ITA Southern Regionals

BATON ROUGE, La. – Thursday was a busy day of tennis for Mississippi State's men.
The Bulldogs competed in 10 matches during the second day of play at the ITA Southern Regional Championships and claimed victory in eight of those contests.
Michal Novansky and Radomir Tomic had double duty during the day with each winning their singles and doubles matches. Novansky and Tomic teamed up to defeat Marc Mail and Joseph Townes of New Orleans 8-5. They also prevailed in straight sets in singles as Novansky downed Troy's Vicente Arbelaez Prati  6-3, 6-1 while Tomic topped Matei Palcau of Jacksonville State 7-6(8), 6-2.
Several more from State shined in singles as well. No. 12 Petar Jovanovic came out on top following a three-set battle with LSU's Brock Anderson. Anderson took the first set on his home court 6-4 but Jovanovic battled back to take the final two 7-5, 6-3 to secure the win. No. 60 Mario Martinez Serrano won 6-4, 6-2 over Samford's Santiago Arredono and No. 107 Benito Sanchez Martinez was dominant in a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Louisiana's William Ribero.
Niccolo Baroni secured a 6-4, 7-6(4) triumph over Samford's Darcy Nicholls as the Bulldogs saw six players advance to the second round of the singles main draw.
The second round of doubles will start the day on Thursday as Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez, the No. 1 tandem in college tennis, takes on Auburn's Alexander Frusina and Jake Kennedy at 9 a.m.
Baroni and Martinez Serrano will also be in action following a first-round bye against Loan Lestir and Benjamin Martin of Ole Miss, also at 9 a.m. Novansky and Tomic take the court 30 minutes later against Charlie Penman and Lucius Soller of Jacksonville State.
Beginning at 11 a.m. in singles, Jovanovic is set for second round action against Samford's Hayden Khoo Menon, Baroni battles against Isac Stromberg of Ole Miss and Sanchez Martinez goes up against Birtan Duran of North Alabama. Two more Bulldogs will be in action at 12:30 p.m. as Tomic takes on Noah Schlagenhauf of Ole Miss and Martinez Serrano meets LSU's Rudy Ceccon.
Roberto Ferrer Guimaraes is also scheduled for a main draw consolation match against Louisiana's Leonard Tramolay at 12:30 p.m.
