Dennis Signs Woods To 2024 Roster

STARKVILLE – Head coach Julie Darty Dennis added a new addition to the Mississippi State volleyball roster for the 2024 season in Payton Woods.
Woods, a 6-foot-1 outside hitter and defensive specialist joins MSU this spring after spending one season at Sam Houston State.
The Montgomery, Texas native saw action in 49 sets, where she totaled 157 kills (3.20 per set). During conference play with the Bearkats, Woods collected 96 kills (3.50 per set) in eight matches. For her effort on the court, Woods was selected to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team.
"We are really excited to add Payton to our team and have her join us this semester," Dennis said. "She is a wonderful, kind, talented and determined player and person. She will fit right into our culture and our gym and will continue to help us work hard to achieve our goals on and off the court. Our values aligned extremely well; she felt like the perfect fit to join our FaMily. Woods prepped at Lake Creek High School, where she was the 2022 GHCVA Offensive Player of the Year and Vype Houston Player of the Year finalist. Woods helped lead her team to be named the 2022 GHCVA Team of the Year and to becoming State Semi-Finalists.
Also in 2022, Woods was named to the AVCA All-Region Team, 21-5A First Team All-District, Vballrecruiter.com Senior Player of the Year finalist, District 21-5A Co-Offensive MVP, All-Greater Houston Second Team and TGCA All-State First Team.
Woods earned a spot on the 2021 20-5A All-District First Team and All-Montgomery County First Team. The outside hitter garnered a selection to the GHCVA Post-Season Team in 2020 and 2021. In 2020, Woods was named the 20-5A District Hitter of the Year and was selected the All-Montgomery County Second Team.
For her high school career, Woods tallied 1,164 kills, 1,158 digs, 283 aces, 128 blocks and 70 assists. Woods holds Lake Creek High School records in career kills, digs and aces. Academically, Woods earned Academic All-District in 2019 and 2020 and was a Mu Alpha Theta Math honor.
On the club circuit, Woods helped Houston Skyline finish third at the Music City Qualifier. Individually, she was named the 2023 Offensive MVP and led the team with 333 kills.
