Bulldogs Dig Deep For Comeback Win
September 03, 2023 | Soccer
Pair of late goals carry State to victory.
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's tenacious play on the pitch led them to a 2-1 comeback win over Miami at the MSU Soccer Field Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs' intensity and physicality never wavered in the match. Down one goal with two minutes left on the clock, Aitana Martinez-Montoya scored on a penalty kick to tie the game. Ally Perry followed suit with the game-winning goal in the 89' to lead MSU past the Hurricanes.
"I can't explain how I'm feeling right now," Perry said after the win. "I'm just coming back from my ACL [injury]. I was given the opportunity, and I'm really thankful for it. I'm thankful for this team and I'm glad that what I have been working towards paid off."
Following the resilient comeback win over the Hurricanes, head coach James Armstrong gave his evaluation of the team's heroic performance.
"This is a special group," Armstrong said. "They're growing each and every single day. New players are starting to settle in. You saw Ally Perry for the first time, really, this season. [We] knew she was going to come off the bench and do that at the end so couldn't be more proud. That's a big result."
Like the team wearing Maroon and White, the Bulldog faithful didn't waver, either. State fans filled the stands to show their support for their MSU soccer team and after the comeback victory, Armstrong gave credit for the victory to the outstanding crowd at the pitch.
"The crowd was unbelievable for a Sunday," Armstrong said of the attendance. "[A] 12 o'clock [match] is difficult with church. [I'm] super proud of the team effort [and] super proud of the community. Couldn't ask for more."
Goalkeeper Maddy Anderson also shined in Sunday's comeback victory over Miami. Anderson recorded two saves in the match, giving her 15 total so far this season. The talented goalie ranks second in the SEC in total saves and is third in saves per game with an average of 2.75 saves. Armstrong discussed Anderson's performance on the pitch and the leadership that she displays week in and week out.
"She's got that leadership, she's got that poise, [and] whoever you put in the backline knows that Maddy is behind them, talking to them [and] guiding them," Armstrong said. "A lot of times people see the saves, but they don't see how many times she distributes the ball. [She knows] when to slow it down [and] when to speed it up. She had another great game today. She's working really hard right now, and I think she's playing [her] best soccer at the moment."
