Bulldogs To Battle UAB In Preseason Test
August 18, 2023 | Volleyball
STARKVILLLE – With less than a week before the regular season begins, the Mississippi State volleyball team faces UAB in an exhibition match on Saturday, Aug. 19 at 4 p.m. in the Newell-Grissom Building.
Admission is free, and fans can follow the match courtesy of live stats. For all home volleyball matches, doors will open one hour prior to first serve.
"I am so excited for our 2023 season to start as we welcome UAB to our gym on Saturday for a little exhibition action," head coach Julie Darty Dennis said. "We have been working hard in the gym and trying to prepare for the season ahead, but the best preparation is really competition across the net. I am thrilled that we have the chance to play someone besides ourselves and really gauge where we are as a group, where we need more focus and work as we head into a super busy and competitive fall season. UAB is a top-notch program run by a wonderfully talented coaching staff, so this is not going to be an easy exhibition match. We wanted to get tested and pushed early and I know that this Saturday will provide us an opportunity to really get tested. I can't wait to see our FaMily at the Griss!"
The Bulldogs added four transfers to the roster in Alexa Fortin Goede, Zoe Gonzales, Karli Schmidt and Amina Shackelford. Goede joins the squad from Georgia where she posted 530 assists and 229 digs during her career. Gonzales began her career at Wake Forest before joining Jacksonville State, where she garnered a total of 386 points, 289 kills and 164 blocks during her time at JSU.
Schmidt joins the Bulldogs from Kansas where she tallied 93 career kills and 101 career points. Shackelford comes to Starkville after spending three seasons at Butler, claiming 619 kills, 750.5 points and 223 digs.
Mississippi State's freshman class is ready to make an impact and features, Erin Kline, Mary Neal, Arissa Smith and Ashley Sturzoiu.
State's roster also includes nine student-athletes who were a part of the 2022 roster – Sophie Agee, Yuliana Amador, Avery Fitzgerald, Georgia Anne McCarter, Lauren Myrick, Emily Oerther, Caylee Sharkey, Rebecca Walk and Sanaa Williams.
Saturday's match comes as MSU's lone exhibition match before beginning the 2023 campaign. State will open up regular-season play hosting Eastern Kentucky, Northwestern State and Louisiana as part of the StarkVegas Classic from Aug. 25-27.
