May 22, 2023 | Baseball
STARKVILLE – Two members of Mississippi State's baseball team received postseason honors from the Southeastern Conference on Monday.
Designated hitter Hunter Hines was named first-team All-SEC by the league's coaches, while outfielder Dakota Jordan was tabbed to the Freshman All-SEC Team.
Over his sophomore season, Hines led the team in home runs (22) and RBIs (61). He hit .297 and is the first player at MSU to hit 20 or more homers in a single season since Brent Rooker hit 23 during the 2017 season.
His 22 home runs ranked tenth in the nation and third in the Southeastern Conference and tied for the sixth-most in school history. The 61 runs batted in are the seventh-most in the SEC. He has 17 multi-hit games during this season, the most on the team. Hines also led the team with a .683 slugging percentage and was second with 60 hits.
In his two years wearing the Maroon and White, Hines has hit 38 home runs - the 10th most in a career at Mississippi State - while posting a .299 batting average. He has driven in 113 runs in 108 games for the Dawgs.
Hines is the fourth MSU designated hitter to garner a first-team All-SEC selection and first since Jack Kruger in 2016. Bruce Castoria (1982) and Rafael Palmeiro (1983) are the only other designated hitters to earn first-team honors.
In his freshman season for the Dawgs, Jordan finished the season hitting .307, the second-best mark on the team. He had 47 hits, with 20 going for extra bases, ten home runs, nine doubles and a triple. He drove in the third most runs on the team with 40.
Jordan made 34 starts in left field, four in center field, and three at DH. During Southeastern Conference games this season, Jordan hit .333 and belted eight of his 10 homers. Jordan is the 13th Dawg to earn SEC All-Freshman Team.
