
Ewing Named to WGCA National Coach of the Year Watch List

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla – Mississippi State University's women's golf head coach Charlie Ewing has been named to the 2022-23 Division I Jackie Steinman Women's Golf Coaches Association National Coach of the Year Presented by Golf Pride Watch List, the organization announced Wednesday.
The 2022-23 season has featured some uncharted territory for the Bulldogs under third-year head coach Charlie Ewing. After entering the season ranked 31st, Mississippi State propelled up the rankings throughout the fall, becoming the No. 3 ranked team in the country in October, the highest ranking in program history. Featuring a lineup mixed with familiar faces and newcomers including Lopez Ramirez, State has experienced unprecedented success. Led by head coach Charlie Ewing, the 2023 Bulldogs secured a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history. They earned one of the top spots in the field after an impressive season that saw the Dawgs ranked inside the GolfStat top 10 much of the year.
Throughout the season, the Bulldogs have consistently placed well in competitions. With a team stroke average of 295.62, the Bulldogs were consistently among the top performers in the SEC. MSU captured four team championships this season, including going back-to-back championships in the Mason Rudolph Championship and Blessings Collegiate Invitational in the fall. In the spring, State captured the team title at The Show in Las Vegas. Most recently, State captured its first regional win in program history in the Westfield Regional.
This season, Julia Lopez Ramirez became the first Bulldog golfer to be named the SEC Player of the Year, finishing the regular season with a scoring average of 70.31, the lowest in Mississippi State history and the second lowest in all of collegiate golf this season. During the 2022-23 season, Lopez Ramirez has won three individual titles, while placing inside the top five in nine tournaments all while being named the SEC Golfer of the Week three times. Her three individual titles came at the Blessings Collegiate Invite, SEC Championship and most recently, the NCAA Westfield Regional.
In addition to her SEC Player of the Year honor, Lopez Ramirez earned First Team All-SEC honors. Lopez Ramirez wasn't alone in earning SEC recognition on this squad as freshmen Izzy Pellot and Surapa Janthamunee were selected to the All-SEC Freshman Team. Pellot was also selected to the SEC Community Service Team for all her hard work outside of the golf course.
The Bulldogs will return to the course on May 19-24 for the 2023 NCAA National Championship from the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. Championship play will be hosted by Arizona State and The Thunderbirds, with the final three days of the championships televised live by the GOLF Channel.
