May 12, 2023 | Track & Field
STARKVILLE – The Bulldogs closed out the second day of the SEC Outdoor Championships with a trio of student-athletes earning their spot on the SEC podium. Peyton Bair finished third in the decathlon, Tony Jones finished third in the high jump and Cameron Crump finished third in the long jump. The Mississippi State men currently sit in fourth with 31 points.
Bair, who entered Friday in second with 4,263 points in the decathlon, competed in the final five events on Friday. After setting two personal bests on day one, Bair set a personal best in his first event on Friday in the 100m hurdles with a second-place finish and a time of 13.99. Bair went on to earn third in the pole vault and fourth in the 1500m to secure his third-place finish in his first SEC Outdoor Championship with an event total of 7,903 points, a new PR.
Later in the afternoon, Jones would earn his spot on the podium in the high jump. A grad transfer in his first SEC Outdoor Championship, Jones earned the bronze medal on Friday after jumping 2.18 meters (7'1.75"). This was Jones' first time competing in a meet since the Tom Jones Memorial Invite on April 14-15 in Gainesville. There he set a PR with a height of 2.19 meters.
For the first time, Cameron Crump found himself on the long jump podium at the SEC Outdoor Championship. After placing fourth in the long jump in the last two SEC Outdoor Championships, Crump needed all six attempts to earn his spot on the podium. After his first five jumps resulted in him entering his final jump in sixth, Crump reached the 8.00-meter mark (26'3") to jump up to third and earn the bronze medal. Crump's medal presentation will take place on Saturday after the triple jump.
