No. 11 Women’s Golf Caps a Record-Setting Performance to Finish Second at UCF Challenge
February 07, 2023 | Women's Golf
Orlando, Fla. – Mississippi State women's golf completed the final round of a record-setting three days of golf from the UCF Challenge on Tuesday. After 54 holes of play, State finished second shooting 826 (38-under par). The Bulldogs used a late push to card an 8-under par on the last four holes to pull one stroke ahead of Northwestern but fell short of No. 2 Wake Forest who finished with a 42-under par (822).
The Bulldogs were propelled by strong performances from top to bottom over the entire tournament as State did not record a round over par across the entire team. The UCF Challenge marks the lowest 54-hole score in program history (38-under par) as they blasted past the previous record of 32-under in the 2021 Westbrook Invitational. State carded a 10-under (278) third round to achieve the feat, the second-lowest third round in program history. 278 moves into the ninth-lowest round in MSU history.
Julia Lopez Ramirez captured her third consecutive, and twenty-first total round, in the 60s in the Maroon and White to lead State through Tuesday's final round. Lopez Ramirez picked up right where she left off in the previous two rounds, sinking three birdies on the front nine. After rolling in a bogey on Hole 10, Lopez Ramirez answered by rolling in an Eagle on Hole 13. Lopez Ramirez carded a 5-under (67) final round to finish second with 19-under par (197). 19-under par marks the lowest individual score in program history, breaking her own record of 16-under par (200) in the 2022 Paradise Invitational. 65 is the seventh-lowest final round in program history. Lopez Ramirez now sits only four spots back of the legendary Ally McDonald for most rounds in the 60s in a career (25).
Izzy Pellot recorded the best score of her young Bulldog career in the UCF Challenge. Pellot sunk four birdies throughout the round to card 2-under (70). After 54 holes, Pellot finished tied for ninth with 9-under par (207) to mark the best finish of her freshman career.
Abbey Daniel carded her 28th par or better round in her illustrious Bulldog career on Tuesday. Daniel found her groove on the back nine, sinking three birdies on Holes 13, 15 and 18 to finish tied for 14th with 7-under par (209). 7-under par is the second lowest of her career and marks her third top-20 finish.
Hannah Levi recorded her third consecutive round of 71 to lower her score to 3-under par (216). Levi sunk consecutive birdies on Holes 17 and 18 to help State to climb up the leaderboard in the final round. Levi finished tied for 26th.
Surapa Janthamunee, nicknamed SJ, finished 1-under par, tying for 34th. Throughout the round, SJ rolled in three birdies and was very efficient throughout the day in the fourth spot for State as she finished with an even-par (72).
Mississippi State will return to the course for The Show hosted by UNLV in fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada on February 20-21st.

On the Record-Breaking Final Round
"I'm so proud of what our team was able to do this week. They played really good golf all week and never let up. Of course, we would have loved to have come home with the win but that does not mean there is anything to be disappointed in. When competing with the best, you have to be sharp and limit mistakes and Wake Forest just made fewer mistakes than we did. Credit to them for a fantastic week of golf. We just got beat. The same goes for Julia. She had a phenomenal week, breaking her own 54-hole record and somebody just played a little bit better. We have so much positivity to build off of and we will do just that. We also have plenty of areas to clean up and get better and I am confident as a whole we recognize those and will continue to improve every day.
