Corry's Corner - February 2023
February 07, 2023 | Women's Basketball
There's a quote I see all the time that says: Basketball is Life. A catchy phrase. However, it is an untrue statement. Basketball is not life, basketball prepares us for life. This month we have experienced the ebbs and flows of a basketball season. Much like the game itself, the season is full of momentum changes. Moments in which having great energy and positivity are effortless, and then there are those moments in which we must show resilience.
Simply looking at our record for the month of January does not adequately reflect our growth as a program nor does it describe our invaluable experiences. There is so much more than what appears in a simple box score. If I were to sum up the month, I would have to compare it to a series of plays in our home game versus Kentucky. It was the last few minutes of the 4th quarter when Jessika Carter had the ball and DeBreasha Powe cut backdoor. It appeared to be a wide open layup for Debreasha until a Kentucky player reached with her left hand and stole the pass. Excitement turned to panic. Then, within a matter of seconds, Jessika sprinted the length of the court. She would plant her feet inside the paint and take a charge. Panic turned to excitement.
It is within those moments that basketball prepares us for life. It challenges us to remain resilient when something does not go our way. It requires us to be focused within the most hectic situations. Most importantly, it forces us to have a short term memory and instantly move forward.
This month we traveled to Knoxville, Tenn. We enjoyed touring the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, embracing the history of our game. As we walked through the exhibits, players whispered to each other what they knew about different players. They stopped to take selfies in front of the framed picture of Coach Page. For most of them, it was their first visit to the iconic museum and will be a memory they forever cherish.
The month ended with a visit to Henderson Ward Stewart Elementary School for a small group composed of players, managers and staff. They enjoyed playing games with numerous students who had improved their benchmark test scores. The morning was a refreshing break from the rigors of the season. It was more than just an opportunity to give back to the community, but a chance for us to simply enjoy the game.
A basketball season is long and it isn't for the weary. A team must remain a family through its inevitable ebbs and flows. January has given us many great moments. We played in Humphrey Coliseum in front of the best fans in the nation. We beat three great teams. We enjoyed moments together as a family. We learned to remain positive and resilient through trying times.
Basketball is a game of momentum and we are going into February with the momentum in our hands.
Hail State!
