Class of 2024: Abigail Stevens
December 16, 2023 | Softball
STARKVILLE – One of the top players in the state, Abigail Stevens, signed with Mississippi State during the November signing period.
Â
Stevens, out of Braxton, Mississippi, has been a part of two North State Championships at East Rankin Academy. As a junior, the District Player of the Year led the Patriots to their first state championship game in program history. Her father and uncle played baseball and football, respectively, at Mississippi State.
Â
"Abigail Stevens embodies excellence both on the field and in the classroom," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "She has been one of the best players in the state of Mississippi the past few years, and we are excited to keep up her family tradition of wearing the maroon and white. She is a powerful hitter with an imposing presence on the mound, and she can contribute on both sides of the game. I am looking forward to seeing her work with Coach T and bringing her dynamic skillset to StarkVegas."
Â
Stevens struck out 88 batters over 56.0 innings as a sophomore. Offensively, she hit .483 while slugging seven homers and driving in 27 runs. The following year she was named the District Player of the Year after allowing just four earned runs in 70.0 innings. She struck out 156 batters that year, accounting for 52.0 of her innings thrown.
Â
Stevens hit .443 with 35 RBIs and nine homers as a junior. In 2023, she claimed her third straight team MVP and First Team All-District recognitions. That year saw her bat .479 while holding opponents to a .098 batting average. Stevens struck out a career-best 164 batters in her final season, and her final campaign saw her selected All-MAIS and the MAIS All-Star MVP.
Â
"I chose Mississippi State because it just felt like home to me. I grew up a State fan, so I was always watching games in person or on TV," Stevens said. "As soon as I stepped on campus as a little girl, I knew it was the place I wanted to be. The softball team has such a family atmosphere, and I am truly thankful for the opportunity to be a Bulldog."
Â
Stevens played travel ball for the Tennessee Mojo where she batted .397 in her sophomore summer with eight home runs. She posted a 0.80 ERA on the club circuit as a junior while striking out 82 batters in 52.0 innings.
Â
She also earned all-district honor on the basketball court.
Â
Mississippi State softball signed nine student-athletes on National Signing Day on Nov. 8. State's class was ranked No. 15 by Extra Inning Softball. Six of the newcomers have been ranked by Extra Inning Softball as top 100 prospects, marking Rickett's largest number of top-100 prospects since taking over as head coach in 2020. The Bulldogs will continue to release an in-depth look at each signee throughout the month of December.
