Corry's Corner - October 2023

Fall in Starkville is beautiful. There is a mix of warm weather, sunny days and deeply colored leaves. As you walk through campus, you'll see students wearing hoodies with shorts or pants with t-shirts. The days become shorter and the smell of bonfires fill the evening air. There are signs of the changing seasons in a vibrant college town. For us, fall means the real season is on the horizon.
We opened the month with our annual Maroon Madness. This year we had a small twist on the event as we traveled to the Columbus Air Force Base and enjoyed interacting with military members and their families. The evening not only provided our program a chance to have fun and showcase the work we have put in, but more importantly an opportunity to thank everyone for the sacrifices they continually make for our country.
This fall also included a weekend off during our academic fall break. Our players were provided time to rest, recover and rejuvenate. Darrione, Mjarcle, Jessika and Meloney used this opportunity to visit with family, while Debreasha, Lauren, Ramani, Nyayongah, Jasmine, Quanirah, Jerkaila and Erynn visited Atlanta together. The time spent together creating TikToks, shopping and enjoying each other's company refreshed everyone for the subsequent weeks.
The break proved to be productive for our players. We returned refreshed and ready for the grind that would prepare us for our first game. Upon returning we competed in two scrimmage games, took a road trip to Birmingham, had practices, strength training and dinners at Coach Purcell's house. We enjoyed making s'mores on his backyard fire pit, and for some, it was their first time making them over a real fire. We only burned a couple of marshmallows during the "roasting" process.
While we have accomplished some of our team's basketball goals for the preseason, we have also reached milestones off the court. First, Quanirah, Jessika, Ramani and Meloney won our prestigious Academic Big Dawg awards for their achievements in the classroom. Second, Jessika and Jerkaila applied the skills learned in our media training with ESPN analyst Andraya Carter and represented the team at the SEC Media Day. Third, Mjarcle continued her philanthropic efforts in Starkville through volunteering with various organizations.
The fall marks the official beginning of our season's journey. As I write this, we are looking forward to our first game in Humphrey Coliseum next week and we hope to see you there!
