Soccer Dawgs Knock Off Bama Once Again, Advance to SEC Semifinals for the First Time in Program History
November 01, 2023 | Soccer
Pensacola, Fla. – Mississippi State soccer continues to rewrite the program record books. In a year full of "firsts" for the Bulldogs, Tuesday night was no different. State advanced past Alabama for the second time this season, earning a spot in the SEC Tournament semifinals for the first time in program history.
In a very windy and cold affair, Pensacola played host to the nightcap of the quarterfinal round. In a rematch of the regular season affair just nine days ago, the Crimson Tide came out looking for revenge. In the 24th minute, Bama struck first on a bouncing ball in the box that found the foot of Brooke Steere and into the back of the net to give the Crimson Tide a 1-nill lead.
After trailing at the half, the Dawgs came out of the locker room with a vengeance. After trailing the first half in shots 10-2, the Dawgs were able to put shots on goal early in the second half. In the 55th minute, Bama was called for a handball in the box, resulting in a penalty kick for State. Aitana Martinez-Montoya looked to take advantage as she lined it up. Martinez-Montoya stepped up as the whistle blew, firing the ball into the back of the net, knotting up the match at 1-1.
State and Bama traded scoring chances throughout the rest of regulation, however, neither team could find the back of the net. The battle waged on through two overtimes, neither team wavering. Penalty kicks was the only thing left to decide who would advance.
Aitana Martinez-Montoya and Kennedy White secured successful penalty kicks as Maddy Anderson did not allow Alabama to find the net, giving State the 2-0 advantage to advance into the SEC semifinals.
Maddy Anderson stepped up more than once on Tuesday, securing her season high in saves with eight. Within the 110 minutes in between the pipes, Bama registered 20 shots, but could not send one past Anderson after their opening goal.
No. 4 seed Mississippi State will return to the pitch for a rematch with the No. 1 seed Arkansas Razorbacks on Thursday in Pensacola. The matchup is slated for a 5:00 PM kick as the Dawgs will look to make history once again by advancing to Championship Sunday. The matchup will be featured on SEC Network for a national audience.
