October 07, 2023 | Softball
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State outscored its opponents, 21-0, in a pair of fall games on Friday night. The Bulldogs defeated Chipola College, 15-0, before downing Copiah-Lincoln CC, 6-0. State combined for 21 hits in the two games.
Â
To open the day, MSU broke open the game with Chipola by scoring seven runs in the second inning. After loading the bases with one out, State capitalized on four errors in the inning to take a commanding lead. The Bulldogs added six more runs in the fifth inning thanks in large part to a three-run double from Ella Wesolowski.
Â
Matalasi Faapito was named the defensive player of the game after striking out seven of the 12 batters she faced. She also collected an RBI at the plate with a ground out. Kylee Edwards drove in a pair of runs, and Brylie St. Clair went 2-for-2. Wesolowski was the team's offensive player of the game, but also helped on the defensive side of the ball, catching a runner stealing.
Â
Delainey Everett pitched 3.0 hitless innings. She has now allowed just one hit in 9.0 innings this fall while striking out 17.
Â
The long ball provided most of State's run support against Copiah-Lincoln. Kiarra Sells, Nadia Barbary and Jessie Blaine all hit solo home runs. Barbary also doubled to go 2-for-2 and earn the team's offensive player of the game recognition. Wesolowski doubled for the second time on the day and added an RBI single. The final two Bulldog runs came on a bunt from Jadyn Burney that saw the pitcher throw the ball away up the first base line.
Â
Aspen Wesley was the defensive player of the game, tossing 4.0 one-hit innings. She struck out eight batters, and the only hit she allowed came on a bunt to open the fourth. Wesley responded by striking out the next three batters to close her evening. Josey Marron threw the final 3.0 innings, striking out five of the 11 she faced.
