Softball Announces February Trip To Mexico
October 04, 2023 | Softball
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State softball will return to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, for the first time since 2019. The Bulldogs are set to play four games in the 2024 Puerto Vallarta College Challenge on Feb. 16-17.
Â
The Bulldogs are 5-3 all-time in Puerto Vallarta, having played in the 2019 and 2017 editions of the event. State picked up wins against Sacramento State and UCF in its last trip to Mexico and defeated Fresno State, Texas Tech and Florida Gulf Coast in 2017.
Â
MSU is scheduled to play UC Davis at 10 a.m. CT on Feb. 16 to open their stay in Puerto Vallarta. The Bulldogs will later play UC San Diego at 3 p.m. that day. On Saturday, Feb. 17 MSU will play Utah at 6 p.m. before meeting Clemson at 8:30 p.m.
Â
State has met UC Davis just once previously, dropping a one-run contest in 2007 at a neutral field in Las Vegas. The Bulldogs have never played UC San Diego.
Â
Saturday's matchups will be a tough early-season test for State as both Utah and Clemson made deep postseason runs last year. Clemson reached the Super Regionals before being eliminated by eventual national champion Oklahoma. Utah reached the Women's College World Series.
Â
State won its last meeting with Utah in 2005, a 10-3 victory in Palm Springs, California. The Clemson program started in 2020, and this will be the Bulldogs' first meeting with the Tigers.
Â
The Southeastern Conference announced the league schedule on Sept. 20. The Bulldogs open conference play on March 8 at Ole Miss and will play their SEC home opener against Texas A&M on March 15.
